A Finished Patio

This weekend we accomplished something big! We finally got our patio finished. This project took us several weekends to finish, and we were not able to work each weekend, which is why it look so long to complete. But this weekend we got it done. So, just to refresh your memory, here is a before photo:

Ad a photo of the area after we got all the grass and rocks out:

At about this point in the process I decided to turn to sketchup to get an idea of what we wanted to do in the space. So I whipped this drawing out:

And then we waited for a while. Matthew has been working hard at his seminary classes which is great, but slowed the patio process to a halt for a while. Then one weekend we rented a truck and got all of the gravel, sand, and pavers laid in one Saturday. We were feeling pretty proud of our progress at that point. What made the deal even sweeter was that the pavers we purchased were originally over $2.00 a piece. We got them for just 99 cents a piece. Sold.

Then one weekend I was able to work on the border around the patio:

And that photo above is where we started the day yesterday. You can see the flowers we purchased. I couldn’t wait to get those planted, but we had to get the rest of the border finished and the soil in a little bit better condition than the rocky mess it was. Below are some more progress photos. You can see that we got the border finished and figured out where we wanted to place the plants.

And now for the AFTER.

The chairs above are chairs that Matthew and I brought back with us from our honeymoon in Belize. They’ve floated around our house for 4 years. I am so glad they finally have the perfect home on our new patio.

Of course we had to set up a camera and get a photo of us after our hard work, drinking our favorite Sonic drinks on our new patio.

And this evening we lit some tiki torches and had dinner out there. It was such a peaceful, cool evening and a great end to the weekend.

  1. HALEY! This looks incredible!! Great job, guys! And your work is inspiring. I can’t wait to get to work on our backyard. What program do you use to do the mockups?

    • Thanks Stephanie. I used google sketch up. It is incredibly easy to learn and is a free download. We use it a lot in school for our projects and also at the architecture firms I worked for. Give it a try!

  2. This is so cool!! You are so talented and dedicated – Mark and I will have a lot to learn from you guys when we have our first home, whenever that day comes!

  3. Beautiful! I love the patio, and the agapanthus is my favorite flower! I know this was hard work, but what a nice finished product!
